In Loving Memory

Sachiko Toyoda 1931-2026

I lost grandma Sachiko in February and its been an emotional time for me.

I was named after Grandma Sachiko and I saw her almost every week of my life.  In her later years she suffered from Dementia and lost all her memories and sense of self.  That didn't stop me from doing 2 big shoots with Grandma Sachiko.  Not understanding why we were doing these photos or where she was or why the studio said her name on the wall…she gladly obliged and smiled when she could for all the photos I wanted to snap of her.  She was tired but never complained.

The last shoot, about 2 years ago, I was honored to photograph my grandma in her prized blue kimono, the one she wore to her 50th wedding anniversary so long ago.  During that shoot she got her memory back for about 20 minutes.  It was beautiful.  That was the last time I was able to see my grandma as “Sachiko” instead of the usual blank face dementia version.  That was the last time my kids and I got to hold Grandma, laugh and cry with her and just be in the moment.

Grandma Sachiko slipped away slowly for the next 2 years and passed quietly, in her sleep in February.  I got to put her to bed the day we lost her.  Things are full circle and I have no regret.  I'm so rich with memories, time and photos…and to my surprise, a collection of 20 kimonos from grandma Sachiko I never knew about.

I wanted to share this with you, to remind you, that no matter how busy you are with life, don't forget to make time for your family.  Take photos.  Hold your family close.  Make memories together.  All that time invested will give you the richness and bliss that I feel when I think about my Grandma Sachiko.  Thank you for reading this <3
